Has my 🧡 for marketing gone too far?


Hallo Reader,

I’m a born marketer. I love to create, build and promote. It’s what I do for a living and for fun. I like to brand things. I'd go so far as to say I like to brand everything.

I even branded my family.

Yep, we have a logo, sub-marks, a website...all the things. What can I say? I’m a pro. I don't do this stuff half-way.

Now you might think a family brand is excessive but hear me out. I actually think you should consider doing something similar for your family. Keep reading to find out why—and how.

Sit back & relax. Take a moment to reflect on where you are today.

Whether you have fond memories of previous generations or not, their actions have had some influence on where you are today.

And today (and every day) you can choose to keep doing what you’re doing—or you can choose to go in a different direction.

When you create a family brand, you solidify what you stand for. Who you are today, who you want to be in the future.

If you have a positive or particularly interesting family history, you can incorporate that into your family brand.

If you don't, start with today and let your brand influence your future—and future generations.

Here are 4 reasons why you might want to create a family brand:

  1. Cohesion: Create a shared identity that all family members can rally around.
  2. Clear values: Communicate the core values and principles you stand for.
  3. Legacy: Reinforce and pass family values and traditions to future generations.
  4. Storytelling: Document and celebrate your family’s history and growth.

Now here’s what you want to get clear on as you start to plan your family’s brand:

  • Values: What core values and principles are important to your family? What does your family believe in?
  • Mission: What does your family aim to achieve? What do you stand for?
  • Guiding principles: What are your guiding guiding principles? These are based on your moral compass. They'll serve as a guide for decision-making.
  • Traditions: What meaningful and memorable celebrations are important to you?
  • Visual identity: Are there colors, graphics or particular symbols that represent your family?

The Path

Review your roadmap. It's time to prepare for action.

Engage the entire family in the discussion and planning. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Family meetings: Hold regular family meetings to discuss and refine your family brand. Make it a collaborative process.
  • Storytelling: Educate family members about the family’s history, values and traditions through stories, written documents and artifacts. Encourage questions.
  • Document: Capture the past, what's happening today and your plans for the future. Make a plan to document as you go.
