Hola Reader,
There are just a few things in this world that I’d call perfect…
Iced coffee (STōK Cold Brew, please), leopard geckos for pets (I see you, beautiful Mango) & floating in the Gulf of Mexico on a calm, hot August day…
…and that’s pretty much where my list ends. I bet your list is completely different.
Similarly, our families might not be “perfect,” but they’re ours, and that’s what makes them so special. The beauty of family lies in uniqueness, not in perfection.
Today, I’m sharing 3 things I learned during my family storytelling journey—things that made me fall even more in love with my imperfectly perfect family. I hope they inspire you to start documenting your own family’s story, just as it is. It’s some of the most important work I’ve ever done.
1 | Don’t be afraid to ask questions—especially when time is short.
Asking questions can unlock stories and memories you never knew existed. Don’t hesitate.
When my beloved Granny was dying of cancer, learning about the treasured items she had collected over her lifetime was incredibly therapeutic. A pair of white doves I’d always admired? My Papa gave them to her on their wedding day. I’d looked at them almost daily for decades, but I didn’t know their story. Now they sit on my nightstand and I treasure not just the object, but the story behind them.
2 | The younger generation cares.
I used to think kids wouldn’t be interested in family history, but I was wrong. Children ask unexpected questions and see our stories through fresh, eager eyes. My 10-year-old’s favorite activity? Sitting together and flipping through old family photos. I’m so grateful for the stories I can share with her—and even more grateful that she’s excited to hear them.
3 | The sweetness outweighs the discomfort.
Preserving your family’s story can stir up tough emotions. Sometimes it’s painful—sometimes it’s just plain uncomfortable. But those moments pale in comparison to the sweetness of knowing you’ve captured something irreplaceable. It’s in the process of preserving these stories that we realize the imperfections are what make our families uniquely beautiful.
I hope these insights inspire you to begin documenting your own family’s story. If you’d like a little guidance on getting started, I’m here to help.
¡Hasta luego!
Sara
P.S. I know I was a bit biased when I said iced coffee, pet leopard geckos and floating in the Gulf of Mexico were the most perfect things in this world.
